Pier Fatalities

4. August 17, 1958: Clarence Clawson, 32, drowned about 200 feet from the beach as he climbed down off the lake side of the north pier to retrieve a piece of lumber he saw floating in the water. There were 3-4 foot waves breaking. The Coast Guard believed that he had stepped into a hole left by recent pier repairs. Others think he may have slipped on the rocks or had a cramp.
