South Pier Lighthouse

5.   June 27, 1959:  Donald Steensma, 5,  was last seen near the south pier lighthouse about noon while walking from the end of the pier to shore.  It is believed that he fell from the pier after becoming disorientated by a jet plane overhead that was buzzing the state park.  Hundreds of pier fishermen also watched the jet that day but no one saw Donald fall in.   A  massive 10-day search of the community was conducted with the belief that he may have been abducted or wandered off until eventually his body was found washed up on shore.
