Pier Fatalities
11. September 4, 1983: Richard Maciejewski, 25, swam south about 40 yards off the end of the south pier. He slipped down beneath the rocks as he tried to climb back up on the pier which were being washed by 8 foot waves. The same day a woman was saved from the rip current near shore just south of the pier where nine had perished on July 4,1929. More than 40 so-called 'undertow' fatalities have occurred at the 'North Park Rip' since the 1920s.
