16.  August 4, 1994:  Thomas Sanders, 51, walked out  with a group of relatives to the end of the south pier.  Waves were breaking 8ft. and changing directions from west to northwest.  Realizing the danger the group started back when two of the group were washed into the lake along with 4 or 5 others.  Most were rescued by persons on the pier and by jet-skiers but Sanders was lost.  Later, two Grand Haven Public Safety Officers were swept off when trying to conduct a search, but were able to get backon the pier.
