The Thing is Done.

BY DAVID FLETCHER HUNTON

Ring the Bells!  The joyous Bells!

Fill the town with music sweet!

Every peal, in triumph tells,

That Schley’s vict’ry, was complete!

Ring and swing them up and down!

Make the belfries rock and reel!

Send their children from town to town,

Long and loud, and peal on peal!

The game is played, and Schley has won!

Hip! Hip!  HURRAH THE THING IS DONE!

Ring the Bells! And ring them long!

Schley, has sunk Cervera’s Fleet!

Blow the whistles loud and strong!

Santiago’s at our feet!

Ring and swing O merry Bells!

Let the lofty steeples reel!

Every stroke, with rapture tells,

How our grateful people feel!

Bring out the Band!  Bring out the Gun!

Hip!  Hip!  HURRAH!  THE THING IS DONE!

Blow the Whistles !  Ring the Bells!

Bring out the guns, and let them roar;

‘Till our hills and plains and dells,

Echo with their wild outpour!

Let the Rockets jump and scream!

Let the Roman Candles pop!

Till old Spain, wakes from her dream,

To see her former prestige drop!

Schley, sunk her ships, one after one!

Hip!  Hip! HURRAH THE THING IS DONE!

Ring, O Bells, on Churches grand!

Say to Germany, and France;

Lend old Spain a “helping hand”

And we’ll give you both a dance!

Ring the Bells !  Yes, every Bell!

Blow the Whistles loud and long!

Let their notes in thunder tell,

Right, HAS TRIUMPHED OVER WRONG.

Build up Bonfires!  Have lots of fun!

Hip!  Hip!  HURRAH THE THING IS DONE!

Ring, and swing, O happy Bells!

Sampson, Schley, and Shafter, win!

Every peal in triumph tells,

Better times will soon begin.

Freer breathe the slaves of Spain;

Brighter grows their future way;

Hope’s bright Rainbow glows again,

With a prophecy of day.

Our brave Jack Tars, have barely won!

Hip!  Hip!  HURRAH THE THING IS DONE!

Ring the Bells !  A nation’s Bells!

“Yanks” and “Johnnies,” won the fight!

Cuba’s heart, just throbs and swells

With emotions of delight!

Let us sing a grateful song!

Sing like Miriam, at the Sea:

Many thanks to God belong;

HE HAS HELPED US WONDROUSLY!

Cervera’s skulking race is run!

Hip!  Hip!  HURRAH!  THE THING IS DONE!
