When Diekema’s Won the Day

BY DAVID FLETCHER HUNTON

TUNE, “WHEN JOHNNY COMES MARCHING HOME.”

We have a man with us tonight,

Hurrah, hurrah!

In whom our loyal hearts delight,

Hurrah, hurrah!

We’ve named him for a place of trust,

We sworn to land him there or bust;

And we will all be gay,

When Diekema’s won the day.

We’ll land our loyal Wolverine,

Hurrah, hurrah!

Where Smith has heretofore been seen,

Hurrah, hurrah!

We point with pride to all his past,

As boy and man, from first to last,

And we’ll all feel good,

When Diekema’s won the day

When Diekema has won the day,

Hurrah, hurrah!

We’ll celebrate in the good old way,

Hurrah, hurrah!

We’ll roast an ox, and boom the gun.

We’ll have a carnival of fun;

And we’ll shout and cheer,

For our next congressman.

We’ll braid a wreath of laurel now,

Hurrah, hurrah!

And place it on his loyal brow,

Hurrah, hurrah!

We send our best and brightest son,

Into the “House” at Washington;

And we’ll hear some day

From G. J. DIEKEMA.
